Deviations by Mey Amisa – Vernissage

„Art tells the truth and lies and somewhere between the two, we begin to understand“ – Mey Amisa

Exhibition Statement “Deviations” by Mey Amisa

In Deviations, I explore the act of deviation and the courage to challenge established norms and to push their boundaries. To deviate is to question, to move beyond what is expected, and to transform limitation into creation. Through my artworks, I investigate how systems whether linguistic, emotional, or physical can be gently invaded, reimagined, and ultimately reshaped.

We all experience moments when our inner peace is disrupted when something or someone invades our rhythm. These interruptions often compel us to adapt, to act differently, and to see the world from a new perspective. Like waves, they ripple outward, affecting others around us. In this sense, deviation becomes both a personal and collective act, perhaps even a necessary one.

At Raststätte Aachen, Deviations unfolds through several interconnected artistic forms:

The Art of Asemic Writing
Writing without semantic meaning where gesture replaces grammar and emotion replaces words. Using a Japanese calligraphy pen, I allow my hand to move freely: emotion leads form, and form reveals feeling. The viewer becomes a reader of rhythm rather than of language.

The Art of Body Language
The body is a living archive. Through my works, we explore emotional states, neurological dysfunctions, and questions of identity interpreted through experimental typography and bodily expression.

Deviations in Motion
Through a dance performance, we witness an exchange between existence and non-existence, a reflection on the human desire for closeness and the simultaneous longing for individual freedom. It is a confrontation between emotional dissonance and the will to live.

As part of Deviations, this performance extends the visual works into movement. The dancer’s body becomes a language in motion shifting between resistance and release, between form and freedom translating the invisible dialogue between disruption and understanding.

I hope this exhibition invites you to embrace deviation: to feel without fear, to interpret freely, and to discover what arises when emotion, body, and language intertwine.

This is Deviations, a solo exhibition by Mey Amisa at Raststätte Aachen.
Two days of art and music — Vernissage on 06.12 with performance and live painting, Exhibition during Matinée Électronique on 07.12.

Artist statement

Born 1997 in Havana, Cuba, and based in Düsseldorf, Mey Amisa is completing her Bachelor’s in Communication Design at Hochschule Düsseldorf and works as a freelance artist and designer. Her work investigates how visual language can create connections across cultures, emotions, and body language.

After an exchange semester at Doshisha Women’s College in Kyoto in 2024, she continues to explore the intersections of experimental typography, graphic design, storytelling, performance, and exhibition identity.

My dream is to open an art studio and gallery in Japan, where I can bring together different ways of thinking and diverse cultures. Proud to be Cuban and German, and to have grown up in a diverse environment, I’ve come to understand how much we can learn from one another through the different narratives that shape our lives.

Having presented my work several times in Tokyo and Kyoto, and now in South Korea, I feel even more inspired to create spaces where art becomes a bridge between worlds.

Through this exhibition “Deviations” I explore deviation as both disruption and creation how invading systems of language, emotion, and the body can lead to new forms of understanding.
